The BSociety is an informal “organization” which is more like a family group founded in 1989 by the then residents of 2nd floor BA (Boys Annex) of the exclusively for freshmen dormitory, Kalayaan Residence Hall of UP Diliman. Probably going crazy at that time over the combination of anxiety of what might happen, boredom due to being stuck for a whole week inside the dorm and happiness over the indefinite cancelation of classes -- due to (and which was probably the main objective of) the newest adventure of the RAM Boys and Gringo in the nearby Posh Subdivision of White Planes; -- the name was naughtily coined while PEOPLE WATCHING on the very steps where all the residents walk down on while going to and from the dining hall exactly during peak of lunch, laughing our hearts out with no reason at all!
To understand the girls who started this group, you must understand the BA wing. No one really knew when the BA was disconnected from the Boys Wing but we all knew that the ratio of boy to girl residents is really lopsided! The Kalayaan Residence Hall before the BA was converted for girls is divided exactly into two sides right from the driveway, entrance steps through the lobby, the TV room until the Dining Hall! Boys on the right side and girls on the other! Needless to say, BA was a girls’ area, disconnected from the girls’ wing of the dormitory! More so, unlike the girls wing where they can crisscross and go from one end to the other on a very long corridor of like a hundred or so rooms, we on the other hand, are in a secluded area with four floors and only 9-10 rooms for two people per room on each floor with only a wall away from the Boys wing in every floor! We slowly developed a special bond due to proximity to each other and constant “secret” night liaison with the boys! This is probably why we who were assigned there had developed our own “culture”, which prompted the girls from the main girls’ wing to call the BA Girls – Barbaric Amazons!
Few months after, the Kalayaan days are over and we have to move on and move out to “Grown Up” dorms! The group turned out going to two different dorms and thus the time together got fewer each year but the craziness and fun when we do get together remains ever present. More so, as we meet more people and have other roommates, those of us who are irresistibly convincing, have brought more people into the fold! And this went on until some of us finally decided to leave the dormitories and rent a house… fewer get together but more people gathered everytime we do have one! This then gave birth to the Associates! We now became BSoc & Assoc!
And as the years pass the Assoc include more the hubbies and offsprings rather than new friends… and so it is now a big FAMILY that grew and grew as time flies! Admittedly the get-togethers became fewer and fewer but the same bond is always present everytime we do meet. In fact, it is as if nothing really changed, -- that is if you ignore the outside looks of bulging tummies, growing waistline, increasing number of kids and widening foreheads -- deep inside we are the same Barbaric Amazons!
The last picture entry, for now, is of the gathering in 2006, which means it will definitely not be the last and which also means I am inviting other BSoc out there to add some more photos, especially of the Manila group who, I believe, meets yearly (at least). I also know that I only have a few pictures posted, mainly because I am sooo good in keeping pictures but sooo lousy in remembering where I placed the albums (note: not at all connected with age!), which is why I tried to scan and posts these few photos before they too will be forgotten. Which is also another way of saying Richel, Mona and Ethel do add some more PICTURES!
Oh, by the way, it doesn't necessarily follow that the B in B Society is the same as the B in BA! Not at all, it doesn't mean Boys as in BA(Boys Annex) nor Barbaric as in BA(Barbaric Amazons)... well not literally anyway, ...but, firguratively, it is very close to both!
this is to start the campain for our upcoming 20th year since the birth of the group.. naway maraming mga bsoc ang makakita nito at makaisip ng iba pang pakulo at sana rin marami sa atin ang magpakita ng muli dahil matagal na nating di nakikita at nakakausap tulad nina sherla, jeverlyn at lenny....
Gee, that was a long, long time ago. But memories and recollections remain as fresh as the day they were made. We've come a long way from our BA wing and 1989.
If you guys ever plan a "grand reunion", sama kami ni Harry (and Christian too). Pero sana naman, i-consider ang scheds nang mga malayo, especially those coming from a several thousand miles away. (ahem - me and my coterie!!)
